GPC Introduction: More clarity in global trading
The Global Product Classification (GPC) replaces, after a transitional phase until 2014, the previous national standard commodity classification (short:SWK) in Germany.
The GPC provides a global standard for more clarity in the supply chain between industry and trade. It includes a four-step hierarchy for grouping products. A brick identifies a category of similar products. In order to provide the necessary screening of the data, the blocks can be provided with additional attributes. For example, not only the information "sausage" is delivered, but also data on the origin or type of sausages can be made. GS1 Germany is currently developing an application recommendation together with companies, in that defines which GPC modules are required attributes.
There is not much time left for companies to adjust to the new standard, because in the summer of 2012, the GPC will, in addition to the SWK, be a mandatory. It replaces it completely after a transitional period in 2014. This means, that from the next major release of the WS1 data pool of SA2 Worldsync in the second quarter of 2012, both, the GPC and the SWC have to be delivered. SA2 Worldsync and the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) today already have corresponding fields for the GPC. Suppliers and buyers are recommended to take into account the new classification at an early stage in their product master data management.
To ensure a smooth start to the new classification system, various information as the GPC in various formats and the mapping of core areas are available in the GS1 Complete Customer Portal under "GPC" services.
To obtain all necessary information on the introduction of the GPC, you will have the opportunity on September 15, 2011 and on December 8, 2011 to participate in a webinar of GS1 Germany. They will, among others, answer the following questions:
• What do the changes mean for my business?
• What is the GPC structure and how do I assign one of my products?
• What schedule is to follow in the context of migration?
You may log in via phone and PC, follow the presentations and feel free to ask questions. Find details for the webinar here.
